Art Journal Backgrounds with Full Colors Pump Dye Sprays and Stencils (Pump Dye com Estencils)

Let me state right now...this is really a post for Brasilians since these sprays are only sold here but I hope everyone reads and enjoys this post.

A few weeks ago I went to the Mega Arts and Crafts show here in São Paulo. It is the largest arts and crafts show in Latin America.  I was very excited because I had seen an ad for a company called Full Colors.  They were promoting their new sprays called Pump Dye.  Now, the sprays I always grab for my journals and backgrounds are the Dylusions sprays by the ever fabulous and delicious Dyan Reaveley.  I love love love everything about these sprays.   I love the colors, I love the way they blend, I love how they react with water...the list is endless.  But, to purchase them in the states and have them sent here is just not cost effective.  I was as hoping that these Pump Dye sprays could work for me as an alternative here.

At the show I spoke to folks at Full Colors.  I explained the type of spray I wanted...one that I could use on paper....one that might blend well with each or with water.  They showed me a spray called Pump Scrap but those dried as soon as they hit the paper.  I wanted a spray that would NOT dry immediately.  I asked a lot of questions about the Pump Dye.  It is a pigment dye that is really made to be used on fabric.  Not paper.   They mentioned many times that they were NOT made for paper.

But, after being here for a while and understanding that Brasilians do not tend to experiment when it comes to art supplies, I was determined to show them that they would be able to be used on paper.

So I placed an order.  And then I played. And they worked!  Now, they do not do the same things that they Dylusions do.  They do not react with water. Although they blended nicely, I did need to spray some water on them to get them to blend better.  They worked nicely with my stencils, and I am beyond happy that I have an alternative here now!!  I also love how vibrant the colors are and how nice this double spread came out.

Hopefully the folks at Full Colors will see this post and see that they have a whole new market for these sprays - the mixed media/scrapbooking/artist group.

Step by Step (Passo a Passo) -

1.  I used the Dylusions Creative Journal by Dyan Reaveley.  I started by applying a layer of Gesso to both pages and dried them with a heat gun.

Eu Usei Dylusions Creative Jounal by Dyan Reaveley.

2.  Then I applied the sprays.  First the Yellow (Amarelo 54), then some of Metallic Blue (Metalizado Azul 34), Metallic Red (Metalizado Vermelho 21), Metallic Old Gold and Gold (Metalizado Ouro Velho 57 e Metalizado Dourado 58), Metallic Silver (Metalizado Prata 66), and White (Branco 10).   When I had a bit of all the colors on the paper, I gave a spritz or two of water to let them blend a bit.  Then dried with a heat gun.

3.  Next I used the Black spray (Preto 60) with the Circle Explosion (TCW278) stencils by The Crafter's Workshop.  Dried with heat gun.  Then I used the White spray with the Circle Fun Stencil by Mary Beth Shaw for StencilGirl Products.  Dried that with a heat gun.

4.  After that I used the Broken Circles stencil (L099) by Terri Stegmiller with the Metallic Blue on the right and left sides.  Dried that with the heat gun and then used the same stencil over it with the white.

That's it.  I love how it came out.  Hope you love it too.  So, if you are a Brasilian artist that loves mixed media or art journaling, I highly recommend that you check out the Pump Dye sprays by Full Colors!!

Pronto. Eu amei o resultado.

StencilGirl THE BOOK Blog Hop Day 2

I was so excited when I was asked to be part of this blog hop - a hop about the book by Stencil Girl herself, Mary Beth Shaw.  And, trust me, this is THE BOOK to have to learn mixed-media techniques to use with your stencils. I had to pick a technique from the book and put my take on it.  I kinda merged two techniques - Woulda Coulda Burn Wood page 18 in the book) and the Doodle Mania Bonus Project (page 77 in the book) - but I made mine into a Wood Burned StenDoodle!

If you cannot wait to get your hands on this book....you can purchase it

When you order from StencilGirl, you will receive an EXCLUSIVE stencil book mark with your order.

*********************************************
Step by Step:

1.  Place the Geomaze stencil over the wood frame and trace, with a pencil or pen, the sections you want to wood burn.

2.  Using the wood burning tool, burn the trace marks.  If you are new to wood burning, follow the instructions that came with the tool and try each of the tips on a piece of scrap wood that come with the tool to see how each one works.

3.  For some of the larger areas, I wanted to add parts of other stencils - in order to StenDoodle the frame.  I used the checkerboard section from the Borders 9J stencil and I used some of the Stars from the 6 Point Starry Night stencil (both by Jessica Sporn).  As you did above, trace with a pen or pencil and then wood burn where you traced.

4.  Now to paint.  I used various watercolor paints, which I thinned out with water and brushed onto the areas.  I did several coats but you can just do one if you want a lighter effect.  When all is dry, I sprayed it with a fixative to give a big of a glossy look.

Insert a photo and you are done!

Supplies Used:

Wood Burning Tool with various tips
Wood frame - I used those $1 frames from your local art store
Watercolor Paints and a brush
Spray fixative
Pencil/Pen
Black Fine Tip Permanent Marker - Sharpie

Hope you liked this project.  Don't forget to leave a comment to be entered for the Giveaway.
